Feeling Festive: Dressing Your Windows for the Holiday Season

Admin • Nov 21, 2018

As the holiday season approaches, you may be preparing all the trimmings for your tree and getting ready to deck the halls. Part of getting into that festive spirit is getting your windows in on the action. From colorful window treatments to creative accents, decorating your windows can be a fun way to prepare for the holiday season. Use the following ideas to inspire your custom window designs.

Velvet Drapes

Velvet drapes in rich holiday colors bring a luxurious look to your festive decor in the living room or dining room. Think deep burgundy or hunter green, or choose a white velvet with gold trim.

When hanging these drapes, you'll want to make sure you use the proper technique. Velvet curtain panels can be heavy, so opt for a sturdy rod that can support the weight of your curtain panels. You'll also want to make sure that you evenly space brackets throughout the length of the rod to prevent sagging.

Once your velvet drapes are in place, get creative with tiebacks. Golden tassels can deliver that upscale look that complements velvet, but you can also choose gold-finished tiebacks in holiday themes as a stunning finishing touch.

DIY Garland Valances

If your existing curtains are a neutral color, consider playing them up with DIY garland valances. You can purchase lengths of artificial garland from your local craft or home goods store for this option. Festoon the garland around your curtain rod or install a temporary rod just above your curtains to hang the greenery off of. For a more intricate look, hang ornaments from the garland once it's in place. You can also add white holiday lights if you have a nearby outlet available.

Suspended Wreaths

Wreaths always bring a festive look to a home, and they are incredibly easy to incorporate into your existing window treatment setup.

Choose one large wreath for a single window, or opt for multiple wreaths to line a picture or bay window. Choose a thick, strong ribbon to hang the wreaths from your curtain rods. You'll want to use your sewing machine and create a strong stitch to prevent the ribbon from coming undone. Each wreath should be centered so they are evenly spaced along the length of the curtain rod.

For a more DIY version of this project, consider creating your own wreaths to hang in the windows. Of course, you can always purchase a few already-made wreaths from your local home goods store.

Snowflake Decals

Snowflake decals are a quick, simple option for decorating your windows. If you already have white or ivory drapes, snowflakes are a natural choice for a subtle look. Shop online or at local stores to find the perfect flakes for your windows.

For a more custom approach, you can make your own decals with a few simple tools, including a cutting tool and self-adhesive vinyl. The decals should be temporary and peel off easily at the end of the holiday season. Accent the windows with white lights around the edges to bring a hint of twinkle to your snowflakes.

Decorative Valances

For a more formal approach to decorating your windows for the holiday season, consider purchasing holiday-themed valances. These window treatments might be a simple holiday color, or they might include a cheerful print complete with reindeer and Christmas trees. This simple approach makes it easy to give your windows a new look for the season, and you can even take this idea one step further by changing out your valances all year long to match the change in seasons or other holidays.

If your windows don't already have valances, you'll want to make sure you install brackets and a separate rod for the valances. This means measuring first to ensure the right bracket length and the right size valance for your windows.

Getting your windows dressed for the holiday season puts a perfect finishing touch on your home.
